Make shift+j and shift+k also do what shift+n and shift+p do
This is how Google reader behaves and it is slightly easier as I often use j and k for navigation and won't have to move the placement of my fingers.

Well, they do work now, but they are backwards. Shift-j should do the same thing as shift-n and shift-k should do the same as shift-p

Yes! This seems to be undocumented in Google Reader, but somehow it's what I used everyday.
