Tomek Wasiak has made one: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/the-old-reader-notifier/
Thanks a lot, Tomek!

Correction: I get the message this add on does not work with Firefox version 17:1 version, not version 17.

Got it. Sweet. Only problem I've found was that the badge appeared below, in my taskbar, instead of above, in my toolbar. Pretty easy to move it, though.

Funny how much smaller browsers (Opera, Safari) already have an add-on, while the browser known for its extensibility does not :(

the Chrome notifier is great, but it would be fantastic to have the same features in Firefox, as it is a more robust browser with a loyal (and sizeable) user base.
Thanks! -

I agree! This is the only reason why i've not already switched from Google to the Old Reader...

I'd love to go with Chrome, but it does not have multiple lines of tabs, and I like...need... to have a lotta tabs open. So I will be with FFox for the forseeable future -- and it's pretty nice anyway, So please... it's something that would motivate me to get a premium sub or donate.

What Thomas said.
Basically it should be a carbon copy of https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/google-reader-watcher/ -
Thomas Burdairon commented
the extension I need is a single icon in the status bar or extension bar that display the number of unread messages and that would open a theoldreader tab when you click on it.

I can't believe how you can ignore firefox.

Until that, you can use this:
Open about:config
search for "browser.contentHandlers"right button: new.. > string
(you will need 3 new string)
(X must be the next highest unique number that hasn't already been used. If you found 0 through 5, you must replace X for 6 in all the following lines)
1:
name: browser.contentHandlers.types.X.title
value: The Old Reader2:
name: browser.contentHandlers.types.X.type
value: application/vnd.mozilla.maybe.feed3:
name: browser.contentHandlers.types.7.uri
value: http://theoldreader.com/feeds/subscribe?url=%sNow you just restart you firefox and you can add feeds to theoldreader through any feed button. You may also add "Rss Ticker" to scroll your RSS feeds in a toolbar.
I hope it helps, bye ^.~ -

I know what the user means, though. I tried to change my default feed handler in Firefox and man, it's difficult to change it to a web based service.

When the API is realeased anyone can make en extension. So imho focusing on the core functions are more important
