Allow me to authenticate via Google without giving you any access to my contacts
Checking for other people in my contacts who use The Old Reader is not a core requirement for the product to work, and I don't want you to have my contacts at all.
This pretty much means I can't use your product at all.

Agreed. The ability to manage my contacts, when I'm not even using the application means it's a complete no-sale for me. I'm also not a Facebook user, so that option is out the window too.
Would be nice if I could just use the site as an RSS reader.

We might be implementing a separate login system, but meanwhile you can use your Facebook account to login.
You can also create a separate Google or Facebook account just to access The Old Reader, this will allow you to login, but will not require you to share any sensitive information with us.

Ditto what wbaxter said.
And yes, I would have preferred not to be forced to "socialize" my RSS experience, though it didn't prevent me from joining The Old Reader. (Y'all seem cool enough so far. :P)

I never actually used the social features of Reader. I just liked it as an RSS feed reader.
