  1. Sort subscriptions by number of unread

Allow sorting of subscriptions by the number of unread items. You could sort either least -> most or most -> least. This way, you could hit all the "small" volume subscriptions first and get to the fuller ones later (or vice-versa)

  5. Open post when clicking anywhere on the post div

When you click somewhere else than the actual characters on a .post div in a feed, the post is marked as read instead of opening. I find this very counter intuitive

  10. implement basic syntax highlighting for pre, code and/or samp tags

I subscribe to a growing number of programming-related blogs, and posts with larger pieces of code become much less comfortable to read than on the origin website. I think (even very basic) syntax highlighting would remedy this.

  11. Be able to set the starting page.

When I start the application, maybe I want it to always show first a certain feed, or maybe I want it to show a specific folder, or "All items".

  12. very small mobile web enhancements

I love the fact that The Old Reader has a mobile web interface. For me this is THE reason to switch to The Old Reader. With a few minor tweaks it could be great !

    1) add the button to mark all as read at the bottom under the feeds. Afterall you browse all the way down while reading them and now you have to scroll back up to press "mark as read".
    2) Would be great if on mobile you could also still work with the categories and they would be collapsed by default. This way you don't have…

  13. Un-bold the headline after you click on it.

In Reader, when you click on a story and read it, the headline becomes un-bolded and marked read. in TheOldReader, even after I click on a headline, it stays bolded.

  14. Show when a feed was last refreshed

Some of my feeds are not geting updated (even after waiting for more than a day). It's nice to have the ability to manually refresh a feed, but I don't want to hit refresh on ALL my feeds.

So, for each of my feeds I'd like to know when was th last refresh timestamp.

  15. Receive RSS feeds per email (weekly, daily...)

Google reader let the opportunity to subscribe to email alerts. Adding the features would be a blast : receiving all the news directly in one's inbox is a huge comfort.

  16. middle clicking a collapsed item's title to open the source link

Some of my feeds have items when clicked on only show a title and no or limited content. It would be great if there was an option to middle click on collapsed items and have them act as a link so that it may be viewed in a new tab. This would save a whole step of having to uncollapse it and click on the title and would allow quick opening of multiple items that are like this.

  18. Add option for image previews in list mode / tile mode

One possible aesthetic improvement would be to display a scaled down image from each post in a slightly more spread-out version of the list view. Or better yet (imo) add an additional option for a tile / mosaic mode, similar to some other much-touted Google Reader alternatives. You might be deliberately avoiding the tile design bandwagon, but I at least think images help greatly in making a long line of posts more pleasant to navigate and go through.

  19. Make sure you have a business model which is profitable and if that includes advertising, so be it.

None of us want a repeat of what we have gone through with the Google Reader fiasco this past week. Google failed to capitalize on their system by not bothering to directly generate revenue from what they were doing. I am not convinced you can exist without a profitable business model so if that means you need to incorporate advertising on your pages, please do so. Advertising could certainly and easily be tuned to the type of feeds we are using so I see the potential as enormous. Given your now massive user base, the potential for income for you…

  20. Add the possibility to manage Twitter feeds too

I just noticed my twitter feeds didn't import, which is a pity. I'm liking The Old Reader as alternative for when the Google one dies...except for that. I like to follow some public people that way because I can easily see their replies to others. I know Twitter doesn't have the RSS button anymore, but feeds are still working (although the url that must be used changed a while ago).
