The interface is rather slow, doing simple things often involves a lot of waiting. Feeds are very slow to update. I have done side by side comparisons with Google reader and found Old Reader to be missing a large number of items.27 votes

This has now been released. If you go to your settings, you can choose to protect your shared items. If selected, you must approve all new follow requests, and your shared items will not be available to anyone except your followers.
If you “like” a post, your name may still appear on the post for all users.

There’s now a subscription management page that allows you to unsubscribe from/move your subscriptions. You can get there by clicking on “Subscriptions” in the user name dropdown in the upper right.
